Catharina Cramer Supports Warsteiner Brewery with €20 Million from Personal Wealth

The Declining Beer Market

The beer industry is facing significant challenges, with declining sales and shifting consumer preferences. Catharina Cramer, the owner of Warsteiner Brewery, is taking critical steps to stabilize her company amidst these hardships. Recently, she announced a commitment of €20 million from her personal wealth to support the House Cramer Group. This decision comes as sales figures for the brewery reveal a troubling downward trend.

According to reports, the House Cramer Group’s leadership has revealed Cramer’s proactive financial support as an “open secret.” A patronage and subordination declaration was filed by Cramer, assuring funding for operations until September 2027. The brewery has appointed restructuring expert Bodo-Joachim Wendenburg as the new CEO and Chief Restructuring Officer. His primary task will be to steer the company back on course in a shrinking market.

Understanding the Patronage Declaration

This patronage declaration allows Cramer to guarantee the financial backing of her company and ensure enough liquidity to meet its obligations to creditors. Cramer issued this declaration before stepping back as a personally liable partner and managing director of the holding company in early 2025. However, a warning remains: if market conditions do not improve, the company’s viability may be at risk.

Market Forces at Play

The challenges are exacerbated by costs associated with energy and wages, drastically affecting consumer behavior. The House Cramer Group has already seen a dramatic drop in its flagship brand, Warsteiner. Once a leading pilsner with an annual volume of 6 million hectoliters, it has plummeted below 1.8 million hectoliters in 2025. The company has since announced plans to consolidate the production of Herforder and Paderborner beers in Warstein, a move aimed at economizing operations.

The overall beer market in Germany has contracted by over 5% in the first half of the year, with Warsteiner’s volume dropping more than 10%. Despite this decline, the group did manage a slight revenue increase of 1.3% in 2024, largely due to price hikes. Yet, the company’s equity has fallen sharply, diminishing from over 40% in 2020 to 20.5% at the end of 2024.

Strategic Changes for Recovery

Bodo-Joachim Wendenburg’s appointment is a strategic effort to implement necessary changes quickly. He previously served as a consultant for the House Cramer Group and will focus on enhancing liquidity and profitability. Wendenburg aims to enact rapid organizational changes to overcome ingrained habits within the management that resist adaptation. His goal is to make “short, hard cuts” to realign the company for success.

The company is also adjusting its production strategies. As of Spring 2026, select Herforder products are already brewing in Warstein and labeled “Brewed in Sauerland.” Future plans include gradually shifting the Paderborner production to Warstein as well, with a complete transition anticipated by late summer.

Looking Ahead

While Cramer intends to focus on her role as a shareholder and manage the family office, the House Cramer Group remains optimistic about navigating these turbulent waters. They are committed to passing the family business to the next generation, even amid declining beer consumption and the rise of non-alcoholic alternatives.

The company emphasizes the need for adaptability to meet changing market conditions and consumer preferences. While concrete details on the restructuring plan remain limited, there is a strong belief within the organization that they can emerge from this crisis stronger and more sustainable. The commitment from Cramer is not just a financial lifeline; it’s a strong declaration of faith in the legacy of the family-owned brewery.
