34-year-old professional soccer player Sebastian Hertner has died in a ski lift accident in the Savin Kuk ski resort in Montenegro, according to the British media, among other things Daily Mail.
The accident happened on Saturday in the Durmitor mountain area near the mountain town of Žabljak.
According to preliminary information, the two-seater chair lift where Hertner was sitting with his wife came off the cable and crashed into the lift behind it.
Hertner fell from the elevator and died instantly at the scene.
His wife had to watch her husband fall from the side. The wife was trapped in the elevator and was later rescued by emergency services. He broke his leg in an accident.
According to the Daily Mail, numerous tourists were stranded for several hours due to the accident.
The authorities closed the elevator and have started investigating the accident.
During his career, Hertner played professional football in Germany, for example for 1860 München, Erzgebirge Aue and Darmstadt at the second highest league level in Germany.
He later captained ETSV Hamburg in Germany’s fifth tier.
He was considered a promising player in the junior age groups and represented Germany in the national under-18 and under-19 teams.
