The designs of the new Holland Casino Groningen in Eelderwolde are ready. The building will open its doors in 2028 on the Ter Borch business park, along the A7.
“Then it is great that they have chosen our plan as a local party. You only design such a casino once, because so many of those buildings are not made in the Netherlands,” says Betten. “It has been a major challenge for our agency.”
The architect drew inspiration for the design from the Onlanden nature reserve. “We enjoyed doing something with the landscape and the nature that is nearby. That is why we tried to create a kind of abstract zigzag pattern in the facade in which you can recognize the reeds of the Onlanden.” This will be done with silver-gray 3D panels. “Like a kind of moving facade that keeps changing in the light.”
The designers received help from the American JCJ Architects for the interior. They often take care of the design of casinos. Betten: “You step into a completely different world that you normally wouldn’t be involved with. That is why it is very nice to soak up all that expertise with such a company that is located in the middle of the gambling capital Las Vegas and to dive into it together.”
If everything goes according to plan, the casino will open in 2028. “The contractor is also ready and they are now entering the implementation phase,” says Betten. He expects them to lay the foundation stone in the fall of 2026. “Then there will be a long construction period of one and a half years, and it will take another six months to house the play park with all its wiring and installations.”
