Austrian winter sports mourn the loss of a former snowboarder. Alexandra Krings has had a lasting impact on the sport.
Former snowboard pioneer Alexandra Krings has died at the age of 51 after a serious illness. “It was with great sadness and dismay that I learned of Alexandra Krings’ far too early death,” said Sports State Secretary Michaela Schmidt on Thursday. The native of Salzburg got people excited about snowboarding thanks to her “brilliant athletic achievements and her friendly nature.”
Krings, who was married to the German biathlon Olympic champion Peter Angerer, leaves behind a son. “My thoughts are with her family and friends in this difficult hour,” continued Schmidt, who also expressed her condolences to Kring’s sisters Heidi and Doresia, who were also successful in sports.
Krings started a total of 108 times in the World Cup and reached the podium eight times. In 1996 she became Austria’s runner-up before competing in the World Cup for the last time in Valdaora in 1999.
