The weather is making conditions difficult at the Ski World Cup in the Dolomites. A Norwegian falls badly. The Swiss Marco Odermatt races to victory again and breaks a special mark.
Marco Odermatt clinched his 50th World Cup victory in the downhill race in Val Gardena. However, the Swiss’s success faded into the background: the Norwegian Fredrik Möller fell badly.
The 25-year-old lost control on the camel humps and hit the slope with full force. The race had to be interrupted, Möller received medical care for a long time and was finally transported away.
According to a statement from the Norwegian Ski Association, the downhill skier suffered bruises and lost two teeth. He is now receiving close medical care to rule out further injuries. “Under the circumstances, he is doing well,” the association later said.
Odermatt won in difficult conditions ahead of his teammate Franjo von Allmen. Local hero Dominik Paris from South Tyrol came third. For the 28-year-old Swiss, it was his fifth win of the season in the eighth World Cup race. He also won the first downhill run of the winter in Beaver Creek. The second race that was canceled there has now been rescheduled in Val Gardena on a shortened route.
The race had a delayed start due to fog and had to be interrupted several times. Training on Wednesday had already been canceled due to the weather. A Super-G is planned for Friday and another downhill run for Saturday.
The German speed drivers once again fell short of expectations. Romed Baumann finished 19th as the best DSV starter. Luis Vogt came 21st on his comeback after a shoulder injury, Simon Jocher only came 41st.
Baumann said after the race: It was “a really good ride”. However, none of the German athletes have been able to meet the Olympic standard so far – around seven weeks before the start of the games in Italy.
