Ann-Katrin Berger initially left her future in the national team open. Now the decision has been made.

Ann-Katrin Berger will continue to guard the goal for the German women’s national team. As the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Thursday, the 35-year-old is continuing her career in the selection. It was recently unclear whether Berger would continue to play games for the DFB team. However, the keeper had already indicated that she could imagine this.

“I’m looking forward to next year to see what the team is capable of,” Berger said after the bitter 3-0 defeat in the Nations League final against Spain at the beginning of December. Nevertheless, the reigning female footballer of the year first asked for time to think about it. A conversation with national coach Christian Wück and goalkeeper coach Michael Fuchs after the game initially did not result in a decision.

The DFB and Wück had always emphasized their desire to keep Berger in the team: “We exchanged ideas and clearly signaled to her that we would be happy to continue the collaboration if she felt ready for it,” the 52-year-old recently told “Kicker”. The next big tournament is coming up in 2027 with the World Cup in Brazil.

Berger made her debut for the DFB women in 2020 and has been number one in the DFB goal since the 2024 Olympic Games. At that time, Horst Hrubesch preferred her to Merle Frohms. Beger has played a total of 29 international matches so far. At the European Championships in Switzerland in the summer, the penalty kick heroine was one of the key players in the team’s advance to the semi-finals.

In club soccer, Berger is active for Gotham FC, with the club she won the title in the US National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in November.
