NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes could apparently play for the Kansas City Chiefs again at the beginning of next season if his operated knee heals optimally.
“His injury was completely repairable, correctable and was repaired Monday night,” said Rick Burkholder, who is the Chiefs’ vice president of sports medicine and performance.
Mahomes has already started rehab in Dallas. The three-time Super Bowl champion was injured on Sunday shortly before the end of the home game against the Los Angeles Chargers (13:16). The loss caused the Chiefs to miss the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2014/15.
According to media reports, Mahomes not only underwent surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in Dallas, the lateral ligament is also said to have been affected. Burkholder emphasized that the recovery time for Mahomes’ injury is typically around nine months, although there are variations. “Every player is different, every sport is different, every position is different,” said the official. Experience has shown that Mahomes works so hard “that he can do it a little faster.”
The NFL’s next season begins on September 10, 2026.
