The city was initially somewhat skeptical about the arrival of the American fast food chain. Kristof Audenaert, mayor of Torhout: “It has been turbulent anyway, but I think many people in Torhout will be happy with the arrival of this McDonalds. One of the largest companies in Torhout supplies the McFlurry’s cookies for all McDonalds.”
60 jobs
The new branch will create almost 60 new jobs. The company puts sustainability first. Mark De Herdt, franchisee: “We have designed special rubbish bins to help customers separate waste streams. We also took various energy-saving measures. For example, we installed heat pumps, solar panels, waterless urinals and rainwater wells.
128th restaurant
McDonald’s restaurants recently opened in Ingelmunster, Kuurne, Menen and Waregem. Tielt is planned for the spring. Adinkerke, Blankenberge and Diksmuide are also on the list. Florent Baudewyns, McDonald’s Belgium: “This is the opening of the 128th restaurant in Belgium. We are looking everywhere where there is still growth. We also hear customers’ requests to get closer to them. We think that a diverse offering is always an advantage for the customer.”
