There is massive criticism of the high prices for tickets for the World Cup. Now FIFA is reacting. But the DFB asks fans to be patient.

Long-term fans of the German national team are to be rewarded with cheaper tickets for their loyalty at the World Cup after sharp criticism of the world association FIFA. But how exactly the small special contingent of tickets for 60 US dollars (51 euros) will be distributed is still unclear. “Fans are therefore strongly advised not to cancel any applications they have made so far and to wait for further information on the award process,” wrote the German Football Association (DFB) on its website.

The world association FIFA had previously announced the new ticket price category for “loyal fans”, responding to global protests against the high prices for tickets. The so-called base rank for fans applies to all World Cup participants and all 104 World Cup games. The quota is available to the respective national associations, which can then decide on the award modalities themselves. Tickets are sold for 60 US dollars (51 euros) per game from the preliminary round to a possible final.

However, there is a manageable number of tickets: Germany, like all other teams, has eight percent of the tickets available per game for the fan block. According to FIFA, ten percent of these tickets will then be in the new basic rank. According to the DFB, there would be 581 tickets against Curaçao, 395 against Ivory Coast and 632 against Ecuador.

The international fan association Football Supporters Europe welcomed the move, but continued to criticize it. The number of cheap tickets is too small, the gaps between the categories are too large and fans with disabilities are ignored. The world association should enter into a serious dialogue that respects the fans’ contribution.

The DFB recently regretted the sometimes horrendous ticket prices. The cheapest tickets in the national team’s fan block for the three group games next summer were previously available for the first group game against Curaçao on June 14th in Houston from 155 euros. For a ticket against Ivory Coast on June 20th in Toronto you had to shell out at least 190 euros. Supporters of the DFB selection could watch the last group game on June 25th against Ecuador in East Rutherford live in the stadium for 230 euros in the best case scenario.

The maximum prices for the preliminary round games are 430 euros (first game), 515 euros (second game) and 600 euros (third game). The World Cup will take place from June 11th to July 19th in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
