A man from Eindhoven has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service. On September 18, 2024, he caused a serious traffic accident on the Diepveldenweg between Bergeijk and Eersel. During a dangerous overtaking maneuver he collided hard with a motorcyclist. The then 48-year-old woman was seriously injured and suffered permanent damage.
The road was winding and the man could not clearly see what was coming from the other side. However, he decided to overtake his predecessor and drove too fast: 76 and 83 kilometers per hour, while 60 kilometers per hour was permitted.
While overtaking, the man ended up on the other side of the road and collided with the motorcyclist who was coming towards him. The victim suffered serious physical injuries, including a broken pubic bone, pelvis and femur and damage to muscles, tendons and bladder. Since the accident, she has been in a wheelchair, can no longer work and is severely limited in her daily life.
Careless
The court in Den Bosch found that the man drove carelessly. The accident could have been prevented if he had obeyed traffic rules and paid more attention.
The man pleaded guilty in court and expressed remorse for his actions. He had no previous criminal offenses to his name and needs his driver’s license for his work.
The court imposed 120 hours of community service on the man. Moreover, if he makes the mistake again within two years, he will be banned from driving a car for a year. The court therefore followed the public prosecutor’s demand.
