Director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, December 14, 2025. According to a statement from her family and local law enforcement, the death was not a natural cause – the couple most likely died in a knife attack.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic deaths of Michele and Rob Reiner,” the family said in a statement. “We are heartbroken over this sudden loss and ask that our privacy be respected during this unimaginably difficult time.”
No suspect caught yet
In a press conference on Sunday evening (December 14), authorities announced that no suspect had yet been caught and no one was in custody. However, Nick Reiner, the couple’s 31-year-old son, was questioned and classified as a “person of interest”.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also issued a statement: “This is a devastating loss for our city and our country. Rob Reiner’s contributions resonate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creativity and commitment to social and economic justice.”
Firefighters found two fatalities
The night of the incident, firefighters responded to a 911 call at 3:38 a.m. When emergency responders arrived, they identified the deceased as a man and a woman, ages 78 and 68. The police immediately launched an investigation, which then developed into a murder case. The LAPD is leading the investigation.
Two neighbors reported what they had seen that night. In the evening, comedians Billy Crystal and Larry David visited the family home. According to the report, they left after a while and Billy Crystal looked like he was about to cry.
The Reiner family owned two houses on the street.
