BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Almost one in three Windows 10 users in Germany assume that they will have to buy a new computer because of the end of support for the Microsoft operating system or have already done so. This is shown by a representative online survey of 800 Windows users in Germany commissioned by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv).
To the question: “What do you think: Do you have to buy a new computer due to the discontinuation of Windows 10 support and the switch to Windows 11 – or have you perhaps already had to?” According to the information, 31 percent answered with “yes, pretty sure” or “I already had to”.
A good one in three takes a risk
Almost half (46 percent) said they had already switched to Windows 11 or planned to do so. Regardless of the associated risks, according to the survey, 34 percent want to continue using Windows 10 even if updates are no longer available. Four percent are planning to switch to a different operating system or have already done so.
Microsoft announced that it would finally end free standard support for Windows 10 on October 14th. Users of the operating system would then have been left alone with possible security gaps unless they took advantage of the option to receive security updates for a limited period of time for a fee.
A few weeks before the date, support was extended by one year for registered customers. There is also the option of receiving updates for another year via a paid program. Since Windows 11 places higher demands on the hardware, some users need a new device to make the switch.
Difficult decision
The consumer advice center criticizes that Microsoft has given many consumers the difficult decision of spending money on a new device or risking their own digital security. The spontaneous extension for software support didn’t change that.
