Henk ten Cate must lead the national football team of Suriname to a World Cup for the first time. The 71-year-old coach has been appointed as successor to Stanley Menzo, who resigned last month after a defeat against Guatemala.
Suriname could have qualified directly for the World Cup with a win over Guatemala, but the team lost 3-1. Suriname can still qualify for the global final round in the United States, Canada and Mexico through international play-offs at the end of March. The formation must first win against Bolivia and then defeat Iraq. The 71-year-old Ten Cate was assistant to the then national coach Aron Winter of Suriname between May 2023 and January 2024.
