Eighty-year-old Irene Winkel, the “mother of the apartment” in Amsterdam where she lived, was found dead after a confrontation with a fake police officer. A so-called police officer had told her on the phone that she would be on a ‘burglary list’. An accomplice showed up at her apartment moments later.
Scammers target the elderly. There is a good chance that they live alone, have built up some wealth and keep their valuables – jewelry, cash – at home. Many also have a landline telephone line, which also applied to Irene Winkel, so it is easy to check whether they are at home.
