Four young people were seriously injured on Saturday night in a traffic accident on the Steeg between Heeswijk-Dinther and Schijndel. Things went wrong around a quarter past two in the morning, when it was very foggy. Police suspect that fog played a role in the accident.
The car in which the young people were traveling came from the direction of Heeswijk-Dinther and left the road, probably due to very dense fog. The car ended up on the side of the road and came to rest sideways against a tree on the left side of the road.
Two young people had to be freed from the badly damaged car by the fire brigade. The rescue operation for one victim took almost an hour and a half. The car first had to be pulled free from the tree with a winch and put back on its wheels. Only then could the fire brigade get the victim out.
The injured were taken to hospitals in Uden, Den Bosch and the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen. A total of five ambulances and two trauma helicopters were called in due to the severity of the situation. However, due to the dense fog, the helicopters could not take off. A trauma team therefore came to De Steeg in a car.
The Steeg was closed to all traffic for hours due to the accident.
The exact ages of the victims have not yet been released. This would involve young people from Uden, Sint-Oedenrode and Venlo, among others.
A recovery company took the car away. The fire brigade sawed down the tree against which the car came to a stop, because it had largely fallen over. The police are investigating and determining whether the driver of the car was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
