Starting today, Hoogeveen will be dedicated to the City Light Festival for three days. Thousands of lights decorate the city center, where the organization also commemorates the death of singer René Karst.
The board looks proudly at the Hoofdstraat Church from a distance. The walls are decorated with special projections. Technicians are putting the finishing touches to the event and the initiators must agree, because the festival is bigger than ever.
“Last year we noticed that it was too busy on the Hoofdstraat. About 100,000 visitors came,” says Jan Stam of the organization. “That is why we are including Park Dwingeland, Van Echtenplein and the Grote Kerk.”
Stam promises many light artworks, music and, above all, fun. “And yes, we also do a tribute around René. The family is aware of it and likes it.” What that will look like is still a secret, he adds. Karst invented the Northern Lights Parade, a precursor to the current festival.
