“Seaweed is simply an amazing product,” explains Aris Molenaar of Olijck Foods. He emphasizes that the seaweed makes the burger more sustainable and healthier, without compromising the taste. “We served thousands of people a burger at the Grand Prix and had no complaints. That says enough, doesn’t it?”
The fact that seaweed is not on the legal allergen list also means that the ingredient does not have to be listed separately. “It is completely safe,” Molenaar guarantees.
‘Tasty is tasty’
He does not know exactly how many hybrid burgers have been sold. He does say that the vast majority of burgers served were of the seaweed variety. There were no complaints and visitors hardly seemed to notice that the composition was different. “Tasty is tasty, whether it is partly vegetable or not.”
The approach was not unique to Zandvoort. The same seaweed burgers were also served at Sail 2025.
