Currently extremely successful: the FC Bayern women.

The FC Bayern women want to get into the top four and directly into the quarter-finals. Two more wins are therefore required – the “aggressive” Atlético Madrid awaits on Wednesday.

The FC Bayern Women start the decisive two matchdays in the Champions League with a lot of tailwind. The Munich team dismantled the very ambitious Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 in the women’s Bundesliga. “A win in Frankfurt is already an exclamation mark,” says midfielder Alara on the BR24Sport microphone. “We were very happy, the mood was also good when we drove back.”

With eleven wins in a row to Madrid

At the moment the mood is always good when the FCB women drive back from somewhere. After all, they have been since the beginning of October – since the bitter 1:7 against FC Barcelona – undefeated, they now have eleven wins in a row. “We have good self-confidence and have won every game since Barca in the Champions League. We can act very confidently,” says the 19-year-old.

On Wednesday evening (9 p.m.) they will be visiting Atlético Madrid, the first time the Munich team will face the Spaniards in a competitive game. Above all, Atlético’s “aggressiveness” will challenge the Munich team, says Alara. Bianca Rech, director of FCB women’s football, agrees: “It’s a team that will demand everything from us physically.”

Atlético has the third best defense in the Champions League

This physicality is particularly noticeable in one value: conceding three goals. Atlético defends its own goal more brilliantly than few other teams, as the third-best defense in the entire league phase table in the Champions League.

In the Spanish league this season they have already won the derby against Real, another CL participant, 2-1. However, similar to the Bavarians, there was a big defeat against Barcelona: 0:6.

For FC Bayern, a win in the fight for the quarter-finals is a must

For the Munich team, however, a win against the ninth-placed team in the Champions League is a must. Ultimately, they want to be among the top four who will reach the quarter-finals directly. “And that’s how we’ll approach the game,” says Rech, who likes the new CL format: “It brings a lot more excitement, but also a lot of dynamism. A lot can happen – depending on how many goals you’ve scored or scored. That’s actually a lot of fun.”

As currently fifth, the FCB women are still sniffing out the places that avoid the round of 16, tied on points with third-placed VfL Wolfsburg and fourth-placed Manchester United. The goal difference is simply unpleasant after the 1:7 defeat against Barcelona.
