After winning the world title on Sunday evening, there was no big party for Jimmy van Schie. The 32-year-old darts player decided to quickly return to Breda, where he could recover from the best moment of his career so far. “What I did for the very first time today? I got a nice bowl of kibbeling and then visited my mother.”
The world title caused many emotions for Van Schie on Sunday. Not only because it was his first WDF world title, but also because he trailed 0-3 in the final against 15-year-old super talent Mitchell Lawrie from Scotland. In the end he won 6-3 after a great comeback.
“I don’t think I would have started without her.”
“A lot came at me after the victory,” he says a day later in the Omroep Brabant program Brabant Today. “I drove back to the Netherlands quite soon after the match to sleep comfortably in my own bed. There I could let it sink in a bit.”
The world title is a result of a lot of talent and hard work, but he also owes it to his girlfriend. It was she who motivated him to start playing darts again about six years ago, after Van Schie had previously decided to quit.
“Without her, I don’t think I would have started again. My girlfriend supports me in everything and that is not always easy, because she is often alone at home due to my career. I have a lot of respect for that.”
“Just on holiday, if the sun is still shining somewhere.”
There is now little time to enjoy the world title, which also earned him 57,000 euros. “I don’t know yet what I’m going to do with that. I think it would be nice to go on holiday, at least if the sun is still shining somewhere. Other than that, we are taking it nice and quiet and there is time to celebrate the holidays with friends and family.”
In January the switch will be turned again and he hopes to win a Tour Card for the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) through the Q-School. If he succeeds, he can show himself at the major tournaments of the most famous darts association. “Then I will play against Michael van Gerwen and other top players. That is my goal.”
