Mohamed Salah caused a stir with sharp criticism of the club and coach. Now his statements could have consequences.
Liverpool FC’s sporting preparation for the away game at Inter Milan in the Champions League is overshadowed by internal tensions. After the recently despised star striker Mohamed Salah started a dispute, he now apparently has to fear for his place in the squad. As transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano and the British “Daily Mail” unanimously report, coach Arne Slot is thinking about foregoing his actual goal guarantor entirely.
Previously, Salah caused a stir with his statements on Saturday evening after the game against Leeds United: “The club promised me a lot in the summer. Now I’m sitting on the bench, so I can say that they didn’t keep that promise,” said the 33-year-old Egyptian. Salah was not in the starting line-up for the third time in a row in the crisis-hit Reds’ 3-3 draw at Leeds and was not substituted on. He also said that someone at the club wanted to get rid of him and that he no longer had a relationship with coach Slot.
Salah also questioned whether he would even play for Liverpool again – the home game against Brighton next weekend may be his last appearance. “I called my parents and told them to come to the game against Brighton. It doesn’t matter whether I play or not. I’ll enjoy it,” said Salah. “I’ll just be at Anfield saying goodbye to the fans before the Africa Cup of Nations because I don’t know what will happen then.”
What Salah’s future looks like with the English champions is unclear. Club officials, including sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group boss Michael Edwards, are reportedly considering disciplinary action. Despite the tense situation, Salah took part in an individual regeneration session in the training center on Sunday as planned.
