Shock at the start: Norris overtaken by his teammate
12/07/2025 – 2:52 p.mReading time: 1 min.

An unexpected scene occurs right at the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Sufferer: World Cup leader Lando Norris. In the spotlight: his teammate Oscar Piastri.
The focus: World Championship leader Lando Norris (currently 408 points) – and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who also has a theoretical chance of winning the title with 392 points.
Start at the Yas Marina Circut in Abu Dhabi: World champion Max Verstappen – Norris’ closest competitor with 396 points – pulls away from pole straight away, closing in on Norris, who cannot overtake from second place. Just behind it is Piastri. And at the end of the long straight, the Australian takes his chance – and uses a clever maneuver to pass his teammate on the outside. What a maneuver! And of all things in the final race in the fight for the title.
In a live interview on Sky, McLaren team boss Zak Brown downplayed the incident: “No, not really,” the American replied when asked whether the action had surprised him. “Well, I don’t think he was surprised,” commented Sky expert Ralf Schumacher smugly afterwards. “It’s a bit of a cannonball ride now.”
At least it’s positive for Norris: even if he comes in third, the Brit would be world champion for the first time, and the 15 points would be enough for him to be unassailable at the top of the rankings.
