The Augsburg team had big plans – and were rewarded in the end. Cologne and Wolfsburg were also able to celebrate.
Five days after parting ways with Sandro Wagner, interim solution Manuel Baum got FC Augsburg up to speed and dealt a low blow to Champions League starters Bayer Leverkusen. Thanks to high levels of aggression and a lot of coolness in front of the opposing goal, the Augsburg team defeated the 2024 champions, who woke up too late, 2-0 (2-0). Dimitrios Giannoulis (6th minute) and Anton Kade (28th) were hard-nosed in their goals.
In the parallel games, 1. FC Köln and FC St. Pauli drew 1-1. DFB young star Saïd El Mala took the lead for the home team (51′), but Ricky-Jade Jones scored shortly before the end (90’+5). Heidenheim turned the game against SC Freiburg around just as late and won 2-1. And Union Berlin? The “Iron”, who lost to FC Bayern in the DFB Cup during the week, suffered their next defeat: 1:3 against VfL Wolfsburg.
Augsburg sometimes wobbled in defense in the first half, but impressed with great effort and simple counterattacking going forward: defender Dimitrios Giannoulis took the lead (6th) and set up Anton Kade’s goal (28th). After the break, FCA were much more secure and repeatedly came dangerously close to Leverkusen’s goal.
The “Werkself”, who had to do without the injured Alejandro Grimaldo, had more of the game and numerous scenes in and in the Augsburg penalty area, but overall they did not seem determined enough and were sometimes sleepy. Substitute Eliesse Ben Seghir had the best chance with a shot onto the crossbar (65th). Coach Kasper Hjulmand’s team lost the second league game in a row after the 1:2 against Borussia Dortmund (and the 1:0 in the cup against BVB).
Horror series ended: Kellerkind FC St. Pauli scored for the first time since mid-September. After nine league defeats in a row, coach Alexander Blessin’s team fought to a lucky 1-1 (0-0) draw with promoted team 1. FC Köln. Ricky-Jade Jones equalized for the Kiezklub in the fourth minute of added time.
