At the Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer, VfB Stuttgart achieved a clear victory in the Europa League. However, there were arguments around the game – on and off the pitch.

VfB Stuttgart can celebrate their first international away win this season. The Swabians won confidently 4-0 (2-0) against the Dutch cup winners Go Ahead Eagles Deventer. Jamie Leweling initially gave the Swabians the lead (20th) and shortly afterwards scored a brace (36th). In the second half, Bilal El Khannous (59th) and Badredine Bouanani increased the score in stoppage time. “To deliver such a performance today is very good,” said double goalscorer Leweling on RTL, “we can build on that.” Teammate Deniz Undav added: “We didn’t let anything go wrong here and finished the game quickly.”

Conflicts between VfB fans and the police

Even without the hoped-for support from their fans, VfB dominated the game from the start in the “De Adelaarshorst” stadium. Before the game there had already been clashes between the Swabian fans and the Dutch policewhich is why many fans stayed away from the game, also out of solidarity.

Ice-cold VfB Stuttgart takes advantage of Deventer’s mistakes

VfB started the game wide awake against their table neighbors in the Europa League. Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß only made two changes compared to 3:3 spectacle in the Bundesliga against Borussia Dortmund: Ramon Hendriks and Atakan Karazor moved into the starting line-up for Chema Andrés and Tiago Tomas, who was out injured. Jamie Leweling had the first big chance after a quarter of an hour: the VfB striker demonstrated his speed and sprinted to the left into the penalty area and shot. However, the acute angle didn’t cause much trouble for Eagles keeper Jari de Busser (16′).

Just four minutes later, Leweling scored. After a mistake in the Dutch build-up game, Maximilian Mittelstädt intercepted the ball just outside the penalty area and quickly passed it to Deniz Undav, who immediately passed it through to Jamie Leweling. Within seconds, the Go Ahead Eagles’ defensive line was broken and Leweling confidently pushed the ball into the right corner of the goal with the outside of his foot to give Stuttgart the lead (20′).

Leweling puts together a brace, El Khannouss increases

The Swabians remained attentive and the lurking was worth it: in the 35th minute there was an opportunity to counterattack. Angelo Stiller passed to the deep Leweling, who moved inwards undisturbed and sent the ball from 17 meters into the left corner (35th). Both the passive defensive line of the Dutch hosts and keeper de Busser did not cut a good figure. Stuttgart deservedly increased the lead to 2-0 and it stayed that way at halftime. “They were my first goals of the season. I just want to build on them now and keep scoring goals. No praise please,” said Leweling with a smile.

The second half started fast and with good chances on both sides, as the hosts from Deventer showed morale and wanted to stick with it. However, VfB still dominated the game, the Swabians managed almost everything and didn’t let up: after just under an hour it was Leweling who scored the next goal. Undav took Leweling’s cross with his chest and laid it on for Bilal El Khannouss, who easily fired into the right corner from eight meters – 3-0 for VfB Stuttgart (59th).

Eagles striker Victor Edvardsen provokes Angelo Stiller

A few minutes later, Leweling almost made it 4-0, but this time he was denied by the Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper de Busser. There was also a lot of frustration among the hosts from Deventer. After an unpleasant gesture against Angelo Stiller, Eagles striker Victor Edvardsen – and Stiller himself – saw yellow. The game took on a bitter aftertaste, especially after Edvardsen repeated the gesture a few minutes later.

However, the game was already decided in terms of play. Badredine Bouanani topped off the Swabians’ success as stoppage time expired and, after a dream pass from Lorenz Assignon, increased the final score to 4-0 for the Swabians (90th+4). VfB achieved its first away win in the Europa League and climbed from 20th place to twelfth place in the table – not a bad starting point in the fight for the playoffs. VfB CEO Alexander Wehrle was also happy about an “unthreatened, confident victory”, which in his opinion could have been even higher.

VfB Stuttgart visits Hamburger SV

With a lot of tailwind, the cup winners should then play in the Volksparkstadion on Sunday. Back in everyday league life, the cup winners face the fourteenth-placed Hamburger SV. The next matchday in the Europa League is in mid-December, when VfB Stuttgart welcomes the Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv (December 11th).
