Milano, 25 Nov. (askanews) – Unlike what was announced, the final vote did not arrive today in the Senate – symbolically coinciding with the international day for the elimination of violence against women – which should have definitively approved, after the unanimous yes in the Chamber, the bill on “free and current” consent, born thanks to a bipartisan agreement wanted and promoted by opposition leader Elly Schlein and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Violence against women, the law on consent stalls in the Senate: the majority holds back
The proposal unexpectedly stalled in the Justice Committee of the Senate, where instead a quick green light was expected, followed by an equally quick and unanimous approval in the Chamber. The one holding back was the League, followed by Forza Italia but also by Meloni’s Fratelli d’Italia. The entire majority asked for additional investigation and in-depth analysis with a series of hearings, paving the way for changes. The opposition left the Chamber in protest.
Giulia Bongiorno: «This law will be passed but we can do it better»
“It is a law that the commission will measure itself against, it was already scheduled to be discussed in the Chamber today, it would have been wonderful, however I noticed that some changes were reported within the commission”, Giulia Bongiorno, president of the Senate Justice Commission, explained then in the Chamber, “I must say that there are small gaps, it would have been nicer to say ‘November 25th cheers’ but we are interested as legislators in being responsible, let’s be clear this law will be made, it will be made little by little better by making these small additions”.
“Let’s do this law better, let’s all do it together – he concluded – the commitment is to do it quickly and improve it a little”.
