The Hayli Gubbi volcano, in the Afar region of Ethiopia, erupted on Sunday morning. According to the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program, this is the first documented eruption of Hayli Gubbi in the past 12,000 years. The eruption left nearby villages covered in dust. The Hayli Gubbi volcano is located in the Erta Ale Range, a volcanic area known for its active craters and lava lakes. It is mainly considered a lava dome, which is a specific volcanic formation. According to local media, no casualties have been reported. However, officials have warned that the ash could affect the livelihoods of local livestock farmers by reducing available grass vegetation.
