The talks are still in the exploratory phase, insiders tell Het Parool. Cruyff would be one of the preferred candidates for the position of technical director, which has been unfilled since the departure of Alex Kroes following the dismissal of coach John Heitinga. If Cruijff is appointed, he will also choose a new trainer.
Cruijff, the son of the Arena’s namesake, played as a youth player in Ajax’s training, but he never played in Ajax’s first team; at Manchester United, FC Barcelona, several other Spanish clubs and even briefly in Ukraine.
He also had nothing to do with Ajax as a trainer and director. He was sporting director at Barcelona and was technical advisor to the Indonesian Football Association when Patrick Kluivert was the national coach there.
