The job of living in Florence, observing the Viola’s horror season, alternates between the pessimism of last place in the table and the belief that sooner or later Fiorentina’s values will emerge. Both schools of thought, however, will have noticed a rather eloquent precedent regarding the fight for survival: only once in the last 31 years has a Serie A team managed to avoid relegation despite not winning any of the first 12 matchdays.
THE CAGLIARI CASE

The Vanoli version of Fiorentina has never lost so far, but they have never won either. As well as under the leadership of Pioli. The 6 points in 12 rounds are disturbing and bring to mind less than encouraging precedents: only Cagliari in 2005-06 managed to achieve salvation after such a bad start. A sensational season, that of the Sardinians: at the end of the twelfth season they had even fewer points than the current Fiorentina (5 against the 6 of the Tuscans), yet in May they closed on 39 points, even fourteenth.

The case of Cagliari brings to mind another historical curiosity. The Sardinians’ first success in 2005-06, in fact, came on the thirteenth matchday: the 2-0 against Sampdoria was the first brick in the construction of the historic salvation. And it constitutes a sort of “last resort”, at least statistically, for Fiorentina and also for Verona, the other team that has never won this season. Yes, because in the history of the three-point Serie A, and therefore since 1994-95, no team in our championship has ever managed to escape after having collected zero victories in the first 13 matchdays.
