Double from Barnes

Newcastle United have recorded a surprising, respectable success in the Premier League. After two defeats, the team led by German international Nick Woltemade came back with a 2-1 (0-0) win against Manchester City, which had been in strong form for weeks. The match winner was Harvey Barnes, who scored a brace for the hosts.
At St. James’ Park, both teams played an entertaining, attacking game with good opportunities on both sides. The strong Woltemade, among others, missed good chances. On the Man City side, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden missed the lead, so the first half remained goalless.
Shortly after the break, however, things got eventful. Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 63rd minute after a remarkable one-two with Bruno Guimarães. Shortly afterwards, Rúben Dias (68th) equalized for the guests. However, Newcastle were not impressed. Just two minutes later, Barnes scored (70′) to give the Magpies the lead again after Guimarães’ header hit the crossbar. After a long VAR check because of a possible offside position, Woltemade and Co. were finally allowed to celebrate.
Man City missed out on moving within one point of leaders Arsenal FC for the time being and are now only third because Chelsea FC overtook Burnley FC with a 2-0 win. Newcastle, still looking for consistency this season, remains in 14th place.
