ÖFB legend Christian Fuchs was introduced as coach of the English fourth division club Newport County on Thursday. The Welsh club, which is part of the English league system, is currently in last place in League Two. For the 39-year-old from Lower Austria, Newport is the first stop as head coach. The long-time ÖFB captain was most recently assistant coach at the US Charlotte FC in the MLS since January 2023. Fuchs was already active in English football for six years as a player, and as a player for Leicester City he won the championship and the cup once.

Newport chief executive Huw Jenkins said of the appointment: “We see in Christian exactly the man who can take our club forward. I am confident that he shares our ambitions and goals for Newport County. We can now look to the future with great optimism. We will look to improve our current situation in League Two and then look from there. Christian is ambitious and would like to coach in the Premier League one day. We believe he shares our strong belief in what Newport County can ultimately achieve.”
