The municipality of Meppel has given the green light for the construction of a new separate cycle path along the Blankensteinweg in the Oosterboer district. This puts an end to months of research, consultation and heated discussions in the neighborhood.
According to the municipality, the chosen scenario offers the safest and most logical connection between Bouwkamp and Oosterboerweg. The new path will be located parallel to the existing access to the Blankensteinweg.
The intersection with the Oosterboerweg will also be adjusted, with cyclists soon having priority. These choices were made in the context of the Bicycle Action Plan, in which Meppel takes measures to improve traffic flow and road safety.
The decision brings peace after a turbulent period in the Oosterboer. The topic has been dividing the neighborhood for some time, something that became extra clear during the well-attended information evening on October 7 this year. More than three hundred residents then came to the meeting, where variants, concerns and suggestions were on the table.
A fifth variant was even introduced by residents themselves. According to the municipality, this was investigated and taken into account, but ultimately turned out to offer no better solution than scenario 1.
Emotions in the neighborhood regularly ran high last year. Previous reports from RTV Drenthe showed how residents and those involved view the situation differently. For example, resident Alice Jonkeren said last year that she has to deal with tensions between cars and cyclists on the current driveway almost every day.
Local residents who are against the construction of the cycle path started a petition that attracted hundreds of signatures. According to them, the new location along the ditch makes the path dangerous for children.
According to councilor Klaas de Vries (Sterk Meppel), the choice comes from “a careful consideration of safety, accessibility and feasibility”. He emphasizes that the municipality has listened carefully to the concerns and ideas shared during the residents’ meeting and in subsequent conversations. According to the municipality, Scenario 1 offers the best guarantees for a safe route, especially for the many students who cycle between Bouwkamp and Oosterboerweg every day.
If the new cycle path were not created, there is also a chance that part of the Blankensteinweg would be hidden from public view, according to the municipality. As a result, a direct connection for cyclists would disappear and they would have to take a detour via other streets. By choosing the separate path now, the municipality believes that a safe and accessible route will be maintained.
Now that the decision has been made, both the municipal council and the residents of Oosterboer will be informed this week. The municipality says that residents will receive a letter explaining the choice and the next steps. The project is scheduled to be implemented next year.
