VfL Wolfsburg impressed in the Champions League. However, Alexandra Popp had to leave the field injured. The coach of the “Wolf Girls” is now giving the first details.

VfL Wolfsburg celebrated an important success in the Champions League: the runner-up impressed with a strong offensive in the 5-2 win against Manchester United. However, the home win was overshadowed by the substitution of captain Alexandra Popp, who left the pitch limping in the 60th minute.

Coach Stephan Lerch gave an update after the game: “Her face was no longer distorted with pain, but we’ll just have to see about it now. It was definitely a blow on the knee.” And further: “Now we have to wait for the diagnosis.”

Despite the loss, VfL did not allow themselves to be disconcerted. Against previously unbeaten English women, the Wolfsburg women were convincing in attack and with nine points from four games they now have progress in their own hands. “That was a big game and a big win for us,” Lerch said on Disney+.

A week after the 3-1 defeat at Olympique Lyon, the two-time Champions League winner showed a clear reaction – even if defensive errors were again noticeable in the two goals conceded. However, the team was ice cold offensively: Ella Peddemors (17th/37th) and Lineth Beerensteyn (45th/65th) each scored twice. In stoppage time, Vivien Endemann (90+6) scored the final point. Beerensteyn was voted player of the game.

“It was a crazy game. After last week, we did a very good job today. I’m very proud of the whole team,” said the Dutchwoman. Looking ahead to the upcoming duels at Real Madrid and against Chelsea FC, she added: “If we continue like this, I think it will be a really nice Champions League season for us.”
