The government invests in the security of local democracy, in which representatives can do their work effectively. €3 million will therefore be made available to keep council and state meetings both publicly accessible and safe, for example by adjusting the layout of the room. In addition, a learning network will be launched in which fellow authorities can share experiences and knowledge.
Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations Frank Rijkaart:
“Our representatives do important work. They have their feet firmly planted in the ground and in direct contact with society. It must remain that way. They deserve an environment in which they can work safely and continue to speak out freely. That is why this government is investing in safety by sharing knowledge and experiences and allocating 3 million for additional measures.
Start national learning network
The national Safe Meetings learning network will start at the end of November. Municipalities, provinces and supporting organizations exchange experiences, knowledge and practical examples. The first group of 28 participating authorities will also receive a financial contribution to implement appropriate safety measures. This can vary from spatial adjustments in the layout and exits of meeting rooms to improving follow-up in the event of incidents.
The insights from the process are shared so that other government organizations can also benefit from them and strengthen their own approach.
Collaboration across the board
The process is carried out from the resilient governance program in close collaboration with the Dutch Association of Mayors (NGB), the Association of Registrars (VvG), StatenlidNu and the Dutch Association for Councilors. Together we work towards a local democracy in which representatives can continue to do their work freely, safely and independently for their residents.
