SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated its fourth win in its fourth game in the European League. Coach Ales Pajovic’s team won confidently against the Romanian club AHC Potaissa Turda with 46:28 (22:15) in their own hall on Tuesday evening.
The SG does not yet have the final certainty of moving into the main round because Irun defeated Saint-Raphael in the parallel game (33:25). However, the Flensburg team are not far away from that after their concentrated performance against Turda over a long period of time. With two games left, they are four points ahead of the Spaniards and the French. The Schleswig-Holsteiners still have to play against both teams on the two remaining match days – next Tuesday at Saint-Raphael (6.45 p.m.) and the following week at home against Irun (December 2nd, 6.45 p.m.).
The game against Turda was also a bit of a frustration for the hosts after their first defeat in the Bundesliga (31:35 against SC Magdeburg). The best thrower in another one-sided encounter – like the first leg a week before – was left winger Patrick Volz with ten goals. Pajovic could even afford to do without defensive specialist Blaz Blagotinsek completely for reasons of load management. The veteran will be challenged again in the league on Friday when the SG travels away to MT Melsungen (8 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter).
SG very playful
Three days after the home defeat against SCM, the SG was extremely enthusiastic right from the start and quickly took a six-goal lead. Marco Grgic in particular was unstoppable by the Romanians, who were extremely passive in their coverage. It was 13:7 after 15 minutes.
In goal, Benjamin Buric was preferred by Pajovic over Kevin Möller and made five saves by the break. In order to get any shots, Turda made many seven-on-six attacks. Beautiful moves alternated again and again with sometimes wild actions and ball losses. For the Flensburgers, many players in the “second row” received playing time: Left winger Volz in particular stood out and scored five goals in the first half.
Only the two pivots Johannes Golla and Lukas Jörgensen were even better than his 80 percent shooting rate in the first 30 minutes: both scored four times in four attempts. We went into the locker room at 10:15 p.m.
Flensburg quickly expands its lead
The unequal duel continued seamlessly in the second half: Grgic took the hosts’ first ten-goal lead (31:21, 42nd). Volz followed up a little later after an outstanding diagonal pass from Niclas Kirkelökke through two Turda players (32:21, 44th).
In view of the situation that had been clarified early on, Pajovic now also sent his youngsters onto the pitch: 18-year-old Romanian Catalin Haidu got playing time in goal against his compatriots. Volz scored Flensburg’s 40th goal of the evening six minutes before the end, but it still had a nice finishing touch: the first professional goal for 17-year-old Moritz Detlefsen.
