The world of sport mourns the loss of one of the best para-cyclists. The Australian Paige Greco was only 28 years old.
Paralympic champion Paige Greco from Australia has died at the age of just 28. This was announced by the Australian Paralympic Committee and the World Cycling Federation UCI. Accordingly, a “sudden medical incident” occurred at her home in Adelaide on Sunday, which ultimately led to her death. Greco won Australia’s first gold medal of the Games in Tokyo in 2021, and she also won four world championship titles on track and road.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic news of Paige’s death. Paige was an exceptional athlete who achieved outstanding achievements at the highest levels of our sport,” said Marne Fechner, CEO of AusCycling: “Moreover, she touched the lives of everyone around her with her positive spirit and courageous attitude.” Greco had cerebral palsy and therefore struggled with movement disorders and muscle stiffness in the right side of his body.
At the World Road Cycling Championships in August she won the bronze medal in the C3 road race, and Greco also competed at the World Track Championships in Rio in October – and competed against, among others, the German Paralympics champion Maike Hausberger. “Rest in peace, champion,” the Trier native wrote in her Instagram story and posted a broken heart: “It’s still hard to believe. We only rode together at the World Cup in Rio last month.”
