The Turkey coach: “Only 30% of the European Championships pass, I hope FIFA studies a mega group on the South American model. Kenan can play anywhere, he knows how to do many things very well”
Vincenzo Montella’s Turkey is about to reach the playoffs just like Italy, the Italian coach agrees the doubts about the qualification system expressed by his colleague Rino Gattuso, and from Seville he launches an idea inviting FIFA to reflect.
CHAMPIONS MODEL
—
South America sends 60% of its teams to the World Cup, and could reach 70% after the intercontinental playoff. Europe does not reach 30%. “These are assessments that I had also made before listening to Gattuso’s words. It is clear that in a single group it is much easier to qualify than not to. Now a lot, too much, depends on the draw: for example, in order to go to the World Cup directly we were obliged to overcome Spain, the European champion team and the best national team in the world. I like the system adopted in the Champions League and in the other European club competitions and I believe, or at least this is my feeling, that FIFA will study a possible reform that follow that same pattern which is a little more fair.” Vincenzo showed great optimism in this sense, but we will see whether his message to the football government will be heard or not.
FREEDOM FOR KENAN
—
On the basis of Luciano Spalletti’s thoughts on the future use of Kenan Yildiz in his Juve and the best position on the pitch of the Turkish talent, we asked for an opinion from those who launched him in the national team: “We must always remember that Kenan is twenty years old, and that at his age there are rare cases of a player with an already definitive position. It would be negative to limit him to just one area of the pitch or in just one well-defined role, it would limit his development and further growth. Here I use him on the left and he is doing very well, but he can also play behind a striker or as a second striker, it depends on the formation, the teammates, the opponent, the situation of the game. Kenan is good in the short and long game, he knows how to do many things very well and can play everywhere.” Freedom for Kenan therefore, and for Spalletti in his use.
