Guido Weijers has not been on television for years with a New Year’s Eve conference and this year we will not see him among the oliebollen on RTL 4. Why is that? “I decide.”
Since 2006, we have seen Guido Weijers’ New Year’s Eve conference no fewer than eleven times on television. They were first broadcast on SBS 6, but in recent years by RTL 4. In 2024, the comedian suddenly decided to cancel after a dispute with Lelystad Airport. “I preferred a quiet summer, so that I could do other fun things.”
‘I’ll decide later’
Why doesn’t Guido do that conference anymore? “Yes, I always decide that during the year itself,” he says at the desk Show news.
Next year maybe? “Yes, I will decide about that at a later time.”
Show expert Bart Ettekoven: “That’s funny. You decide that yourself? You’re not going to do that on behalf of a broadcaster?”
A privilege
Guido explains how it works. “If you want to know: I really think it’s a privilege, but RTL says: ‘As soon as you start doing it, we would like to broadcast it.’ That is of course fantastic that they say that and they also know that an artist will only go if he feels that it is a nice year or something.”
Peter Pannekoek is doing the conference this year. “He literally started writing on January 1 and I usually do that halfway through the year. Then I get a sense: what is the theme of the year, are there similarities in different topics and then I will see what I can make of it during the summer holidays. Then I start writing.”
Professional idiot
Is Guido a fan of Peter’s shows? “I really like Peter. Ever since he did that roast, which was his breakthrough. I also see him occasionally in small comedy clubs.”
He concludes: “Then he will try out on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and then he will still be in his regular tour. He works so hard. A real professional idiot, yes, very nice.”
