It is still unclear whether Manuel Neuer will be in goal for FC Bayern beyond the current season. Now a report from Italy is causing a stir – because a big name is being brought into play as a successor.

Even at the age of 39, Manuel Neuer continues to show strong performances for FC Bayern and is as secure as ever. It is not for nothing that there was already speculation about the goalkeeper returning to the German national team before Neuer himself ruled out a DFB comeback. However, his future in Munich is still unclear; his contract expires next summer.

Neuer himself recently viewed the situation calmly. “I’m totally relaxed,” he said on the sidelines of Bayern’s Champions League game at Paris Saint-Germain at the beginning of November. “I’ll take my time over the winter. And then you can always talk.” First he wants to wait and see how his body reacts to the coming weeks – with tight scheduling and colder temperatures.

The Bayern bosses, on the other hand, are reportedly already working intensively on the goalkeeper position in the team.

According to the Italian “Gazzetta dello Sport”, the German record champions are said to have chosen a candidate for their possible successor: Mike Maignan from AC Milan. The French national goalkeeper, who moved from Lille to the “Rossoneri” in Italy in 2021, is only under contract in Milan until the end of the season. In addition to FC Bayern, Juventus Turin and Chelsea FC are also said to be interested. According to the report, Maignan himself would prefer a move to the Premier League – specifically to the “Blues”.

The 30-year-old moved to AC Milan in 2021 and was voted goalkeeper of the season in his first season in Italy. Maignan also regularly shows strong performances for the French national team; he was only chosen for the team of the tournament at the 2024 European Championships.

“Sport Bild” reported on Sunday that Maignan was not an issue for Bayern. Instead, they expect that Neuer will extend his contract. The club management did not want to give him any instructions. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Jonas Urbig should continue to be built up in the background to become number one in the future.
