Assen has carried out improvements at fifteen high-risk crossings in recent months. “We want everyone in Assen to be able to cross safely,” the municipality said.
Additional traffic signs have been placed at fifteen locations and markings have been reapplied. This makes the zebra crossings more noticeable and meets the guidelines again.
In addition to improving current zebra crossings, tests have also started at Stationsplein, Jan Fabriciusstraat, Oostersingel and Hannieschaftweg. The municipality is testing various measures there, such as new lighting and raised crossings.
The behavior of pedestrians and motorists was examined in advance using camera research and surveys. “These pilots help us to discover what really works,” said councilor Martin Rasker.
Once the results of the pilots are in, the municipality will work on a multi-year plan for safe crossing locations. A proposal will be submitted to the municipal council in the third quarter of next year.
