The municipality is drawing up a new safety plan in response to concerns expressed by residents during various residents’ meetings. The results of a survey among 174 participants were also included in the plan.

The conversations and the survey mainly revealed problems such as dark places, inadequate lighting and a lack of supervision. Based on this, the municipality is now working on a plan with concrete measures to increase the sense of safety at these locations.

Murder of Lisa

According to a spokesperson, Lisa’s murder and the subsequent call to improve street safety prompted the plan. The 17-year-old girl from Abcoude was robbed of her life in August in Duivendrecht, which falls under Ouder-Amstel.

The municipality of Ouder-Amstel previously installed additional cameras on the road where Lisa was killed and the lighting was adjusted. Other municipalities also previously reported that they were taking additional measures to improve safety on the streets.

“We have already mowed in various places in recent months to remove the feeling of insecurity,” says the spokesperson. “But in some locations it takes a little more effort. For example, you cannot simply hang up lighting if that area is protected because of bats.”

The plan also includes measures for supervision and enforcement, collaboration with partners, improvements in public spaces, digital reporting options and regional cooperation for safe cycling routes,” the municipality said.
