In The Hague today, a number of departing MPs were said goodbye, including two Drenthe residents: Nico Uppelschoten (PVV) from Eelde and Harm Holman (NSC) from Roden. Upon their departure, both politicians received a royal decoration for their years of commitment to politics.

The 81-year-old Uppelschoten was not only the oldest Member of Parliament, but also the oldest Member of Parliament ever in the history of the House of Representatives. After a long career in local and provincial politics and the past two years in The Hague, he can now enjoy his retirement.

Holman, a former dairy farmer aged 68, also said goodbye to his seat in Parliament. According to House Speaker Martin Bosma, he was “the terror of many presidents” because of his many interruptions in agricultural debates. Holman gained national fame when he ever delivered the longest motion in Parliament.

Both Uppelschoten and Holman were awarded for their efforts as representatives of the people for more than ten years. Not only in the House of Representatives, but also in the municipal council and the Provincial Council.

In addition, Elke Slagt-Tichelman (GroenLinks-PvdA) from Assen, Jeroen Hartsuiker (VVD) from Klazienaveen and Eline Vedder (CDA) from Ruinerwold were also said goodbye.

The new House of Representatives will be installed tomorrow. All MPs then take the oath or declaration and affirmation. Also the MPs who have been re-elected.
