The winner of this match would advance to the eighth finals with Niko Springer. The German had surprisingly defeated both the Dutch and the Scot. Van Gerwen started energetically and – despite a few missed doubles – broke Anderson at the first opportunity. He then showed that he was awake and answered quickly.
But Mighty Mike was simply a size too big in terms of scoring and when the Vlijmen resident started to double up, there was no stopping his opponent. Van Gerwen won 5-2 with an average of 108.45. As a result, he became group winner and will face Danny Noppert in the next round. “That also needs to be done,” Van Gerwen added afterwards Viaplay.
Danny Noppert down against Jonny Clayton
Noppert did not also win his third group match. The Dutch darts player was defeated by world number six Jonny Clayton 5-4. Yet the Frisian is in the eighth finals.
Noppert – Clayton was a match without high stakes. Noppert was already certain of the next round, although he was still able to secure the group win, while Clayton was eliminated anyway.
Former world champion Michael Smith bursts into tears during an interview after a difficult period: ‘I’m tired of it’
They made it a nice match for the audience with excellent averages. Noppert in particular showed that he was feeling good with an excellent average. But in the eighth leg the engine started to falter a bit TheFreeze and Clayton still took his victory at this tournament.
Wessel Nijman and Gian van Veen
Wessel Nijman is also in the eighth finals. He won very easily against Lisa Ashton: 5-0. As a result, Gian van Veen had to beat Josh Rock to also secure his place in the knockout phase. Rock turned out to be a little sharper in all areas this evening and eliminated the European champion.
