He was responsible for a transfer that still enrages Dallas Mavericks fans today. But now the Texans have parted ways with Nico Harrison. A very big name is also being considered as a successor.

The Dallas Mavericks have drawn personnel consequences. Nine months after Luka Dončić’s spectacular and surprising move to the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA club has parted ways with its general manager Nico Harrison. The franchise announced this on Monday.

Harrison, who was also president of the basketball department, was released effective immediately. Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi will take over his duties on an interim basis. “The search for a permanent successor will begin immediately,” said the Mavericks.

Nowitzki as a possible candidate?

According to USA Today, Dirk Nowitzki is one of the 53-year-old’s possible successors. The 47-year-old spent his entire NBA career with the Mavericks, became NBA champions with the team in 2011 and currently works in a specific role as a special advisor to the club.

Harrison’s tenure was overshadowed by the Dončić transfer, which many have described as the “worst transfer in NBA history.” In February he was responsible for the popular Slovenian’s trade to the Lakers – a transfer that caused displeasure among fans and experts. The young Slovenian point guard, who was considered the team’s future and had led the Mavs to the NBA Finals in 2024, was traded for Anthony Davis, who was six years older. The center, who has been prone to injuries for years, has since missed 30 of 44 games in the regular season. Since then, Harrison has been dogged by catcalls, boos and calls for his dismissal.
