Fans thought of the Berlin club – but Rosalía surprises with a deeper message. Why “Berghain” reveals more about ourselves than about techno.
Rosalía’s song “Berghain” is part of her new album LUX. The track stands out not only musically – through orchestral elements, choirs and trilingualism (German, Spanish, English) – but also through the choice of its title. This refers to Berghain, probably the most legendary techno club in Berlin, around which fascination and myths surround. In particular, the extraordinary sound system and the strict door policy under Sven Marquardt have given the club worldwide cult status.

Homage to the “Cathedral of Techno”?
The title of the anthem-like song suggests that Rosalía may have created a musical homage to the venue often referred to as the “cathedral of techno.” She wouldn’t be the first: Haiyti (“Berghain”) and KIZ (“Berghain Snake”) have also already taken up the fascination surrounding the club’s exclusivity. The track is the lead single from their album LUX and musically marks an orchestral, almost sacred change in style. The title “Berghain” fits into the theory of drama and ecstasy. Some interpretations interpret the club setting as a metaphor for letting go and self-awareness.
Rosalía explains the true meaning
Now the artist herself comments on the speculation. In an Apple Music interview with Zane Lowe, she explains: She interprets “Berghain” as “mountain grove”, i.e. as “mountain forest”. “Berghain means ‘arboleda de la montaña’. It means a group of trees in the forest.” For her, the word has a metaphorical meaning – as an image for the interior of our thoughts, in which one can get lost. She explains: “We all have these labyrinths in our heads, these forests of thoughts that you can get lost in. Berghain – that’s your mind. It’s everyone’s mind.”
There is actually no truth to the theory that Rosalía wants to honor the Berlin techno cave. All she says about the club is: “I always wanted to go to this club, but I never had the courage.”
