A ‘gigantic explosion’ is how local residents describe the cobra that went off at an Italian delicatessen in Nuenen. Owner Carlo Cannavacciuolo is not thinking about an attack, but about a failed burglary. “Two weeks ago they didn’t get in, they have now tried with a heavy explosive.” He hopes that the perpetrators now understand that you cannot just enter.

At I Fratelli you can see a large hole in the front door. The damage around it was cleaned up on Monday afternoon. “I will continue tomorrow with good courage,” says owner Carlo confidently. “I have no enemies, why someone does this is a big mystery to me.”

“It was an attempted burglary, at least I hope so,” the owner begins, looking at his front door. “They already tried to break the window two weeks ago.” Thanks to laminated glass from a luxury clothing store that was previously in the building, you cannot simply enter. “They didn’t succeed both times,” says Carlo with relief. “I think it’s some fringe idiots trying to break in.”

“If a fire had started we would have had a bigger problem.”

Just before five o’clock he was called out of bed by neighbors across the street. “It was a huge bang, local residents were shaking in their beds,” says Carlo. “At first you are shocked, but hours later it has subsided. I am only concerned for the upstairs neighbors. If a fire had started, we would have a bigger problem.”

What he knows thanks to nearby cameras is that a hole was first punched in the tempered glass. “You can then see that a cobra 6 is put into the hole and a huge explosion sounds. But the window does not pop out.” The perpetrators then smash the window, but their attempt to gain entry fails. “They are interrupted by a cyclist and run away.”

“If anyone thinks they are having a fight, they can call me.”

Carlo doesn’t know why someone is targeting his business. “There is no money and there are only a few bottles of wine and oil inside. It is completely unclear to me. I have no quarrel, no debts and no dismissed staff. If anyone thinks they have a quarrel, they can call me.”

Tomorrow the delicatessen will open ‘normally’ again. “Thanks to a lot of lovely people, everything is tidy and clean. But first I’m going to rest on the couch after a tough day.” Carlo hopes it stays this way: “I hope they now understand that they cannot get in here.”
