“If we come third, I will cheer,” says an enthusiastic Hugo Hovenkamp. AZ is currently also in that position in the rankings. An excellent position, because the Alkmaarders have the fourth budget in the Premier League. “The defeat against PSV is a match to quickly forget.”

As a player, Hovenkamp won the national title with AZ in 1981. In addition to the 75-year-old resident of Callantsoog, players such as Kees Kist, Kristen Nygaard and Jan Peters also belonged to the Alkmaar star ensemble.

After his active career, Hovenkamp remained loyal to his club. First as a trainer and later as a scout. In 2013, as an AZ legend, he was allowed to present the KNVB Cup. The big man that day was Adam Maher. He scored in an unparalleled way and that was partly why the Alkmaarders won 2-1 against PSV. Hovenkamp: “He played one of his best games ever.”
