According to club president and supervisory board chairman Herbert Hainer from FC Bayern, professional football urgently needs a cap on the ever escalating player salaries.

“Otherwise the clubs will all go bankrupt at some point and the players won’t earn that good money afterwards,” said Hainer in an “Abendzeitung” talk.

Hainer emphasized that FC Bayern is one of the few clubs that still make regular profits, “but it is becoming increasingly difficult.” He advocated for a solution at European level, even if there had been legal concerns about it in the past.

“My honest opinion is that there should be a cap on player salaries,” said the former Adidas CEO. “How to do that then is a more complicated question.”

An individual maximum limit per professional or a total budget for the entire team is possible. The stars and their advisors are earning more and more, said Hainer, while their employers are struggling.

FC Bayern: Players “are exceptional athletes”, but…

“These are exceptional athletes, no question about it at all. But first and foremost it has to be the case that the club can continue to exist and fulfill its tasks for society and for the employees,” said the FC Bayern club boss.

The German record champions are also currently talking about money in talks with defender Dayot Upamecano, who is reportedly demanding a salary increase and a bonus for the extension of his expiring contract.

“We would like to keep him. I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Hainer about the personnel. For Upamecano, his question about the future is “of course also an important decision,” said the 71-year-old. “In principle, he really likes it at Bayern.”

Because of his contract situation and his strong performances in the last few weeks and months, Upamecano has also attracted interest from other top clubs. Among other things, he is traded at Liverpool FC and particularly hotly at Real Madrid.
