SC Magdeburg remains a power in front of their home crowd. In the duel against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen, however, the Wiegert seven struggled for a long time. It was only in the second half that the Green-Reds were able to shine.
SC Magdeburg remains on the heels of league leaders Flensburg. The Magdeburgers won against the Rhein-Neckar Löwen with 28:24 (11:14) after a hard-fought game in the Getec Arena, which was sold out with 6,600 spectators. The best Magdeburg thrower was Felix Claar with six goals.
SCM offensive with problems
The Magdeburgers started as usual and were ahead 5-2 after a good eight minutes. But the guests got stronger after that and repeatedly found gaps in the SCM defense. In addition, the two lion keepers David Späth and the ex-SCM goalkeeper Mike Jensen shone with strong saves. The Magdeburg team missed five seven-meter penalties alone. Meanwhile, Mannheim went on a 4-0 run and took the lead for the first time at 8:7 (18th). Although coach Bennet Wiegert’s team fought its way to 9:9 (21st), the shooting rate remained below average again (first half only 46 percent) and the Lions (74 percent) pulled ahead to 14:11 by the break.
Magdeburg turns up the heat after the break
Even after the break, Magdeburg had a hard time attacking and had to go to the seven-meter spot again and again – and from there they missed too often. When they were outnumbered, the hosts at least managed to catch up (16:17/38th), but when they were outnumbered, the Lions increased their score to three goals again. The guests were unable to break away any further, instead the SCM showed morale and turned the game around with a 6-0 run (24:20/49th). The Lions shortened the score again, but were unable to turn the game around again. Shortly before the end, Steven Jacobsen saw red after his third time penalty.
