Charli XCX confirmed on social media that she had been asked by director Emerald Fennell to contribute a song to the soundtrack for the new film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel. Fennell called her on Christmas 2024, she said. This inspired her to work on a whole series of pieces.

“After spending so much time on my last album, I was excited to dive into something completely new and completely different,” she wrote on Instagram. “When I think of Wuthering Heights, many things come to mind. I think of passion and pain. I think of England. I think of the moors, I think of the mud and the cold. I think of determination and perseverance.”

In her post about the song “House,” Charli XCX called herself a “huge fan” of the Velvet Underground and recalled a quote from Cale from the documentary about his band: “Every song had to be both elegant and brutal.”

“That voice, so elegant, so brutal. I sent him some songs and we started talking specifically about ‘House.’ We talked about the idea of ​​a poem. He recorded something and sent it to me. Something only John could do. And it was…well, it made me cry,” she wrote. “I’m so happy I got to work with John on this song.
