The dazzling tennis star Nick Kyrgios is hoping to start at the Australian Open in January after a long injury break.
“I don’t know if I should call it a miracle or what, but my knee feels like it’s gotten a few years younger,” the 30-year-old told the Australian Associated Press. Kyrgios had not played a match on the tour since March due to ongoing knee problems.
Now there has been an improvement that is both unexpected and sudden. “I don’t want to shout about it, but something about it has changed so that I was able to train on the pitch for an hour and a half to two hours at a time for three or four days and then actually recover and build on it,” said the Australian: “That’s really exciting and I haven’t told anyone about it yet. I have a new life on the pitch.”
The former Wimbledon finalist, known as a sloppy genius, has not played an official match since the Miami Open in March and has therefore now fallen to number 652 in the world rankings.
In order to compete at the Australian Open, the local hero would need a wildcard from the organizers.
Before his planned official return to the tour, Kyrgios will compete in a new edition of the “Battle of the Sexes” against world number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus on December 28th in Dubai.
