THEThe trend of changing seats is still on the crest of a wave: the Maison Balmain is also turning a new leaf. After fourteen years at the creative helm of the French brand in the orbit of the Mayhoola group, the designer Olivier Rousteing announces his farewellputting an end to one of the longest-running and iconic partnerships of the contemporary fashion system.
Rousteing arrived at Balmain in April 2011, at the age of 25becoming one of the youngest and most courageous creative directors of his generation. Since then, he has transformed the French fashion house into a beacon of modernity, glamor and inclusiveness, breaking every rule. Under his direction, Balmain was not just a brand: rather, it became a cultural manifesto.
Who is Olivier Rousteing
Of Somali-Ethiopian origins, born in Bordeaux in 1985 and adopted by a French family, Olivier Rousteing showed an extraordinary talent from a very young age. Before arriving at Balmain, he trained with an internship at Roberto Cavalliwhere he was the designer of the men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections. It is in Paris, however, that he found his definitive home: he joined the creative team, and in 2011 he was entrusted with the task of carrying on the legacy of founder Pierre Balmain. With his strong aesthetic and his young approach to couture, the designer has been able to combine sensuality and heritage, guiding the label into the heart of pop culture (and social media).
He built a new concept of urban high fashiontransformed fashion shows into events, and consolidated a Balmain Army of supermodels, influencers and global icons. His vision, courageous and inclusive, has contributed to broadening the very definition of luxury, to the point of ferrying the brand into the wardrobes of Gen Z, without ever losing sight of the past.
Olivier Rousteing, the farewell words to Balmain
Rachid Mohamed Rachid, CEO of Mayhoola and president of the brand, spoke of “pioneering vision” and “bold creativity” in thanking Olivier Rousteing for a path that, in his opinion, “redefined the boundaries of fashion”. Even the current CEO, the Italian Matteo Sgarbossa, underlined the indelible impact that the designer has left on the history of the brand.
“I will always carry these years in my heart,” Rousteing saidwho wanted to pay homage to his team, the maison and those who put their trust in him. «What an extraordinary story it was: a love story, a life story» he added in a post on his Instagram profile. Words that suggest a closing chapter, but which also sound like a promise to return to the scene soon.
And now? The future of Balmain
With the farewell of Olivier Rousteing, a new chapter opens for Balmain. The maison, which in recent years has been able to evolve between history and contemporaneity, announces that a new creative direction will be revealed “in due time”. The question that agitates the fashion system is, once again, the same: who will be able to take up the baton? A name within the fashion house and/or the group – which boasts other giants such as Valentino in its portfolio – to guarantee continuity to the aesthetic vision built in recent years, or an outsider ready to redefine the brand’s identity?
One thing is certain: Rousteing’s legacy has left a profound mark. And from today, Balmain is preparing to redesign its future.
